Motivation

Human must make themselves more competitive nowadays. As a result, the work and life stress increase gradually. If human body is under a long-term stress, it may cause neurasthenia, headache, insomnia and so on.


While our brain working, it releases weak bioelectricity that is so-called electroencephalography (EEG). EEG can reflect person's mental status. This research proposal hopes to determine person's mental status by measuring and analyzing EEG. According to different mental status, people can do suitable activities to avoid exhaustion. In addition, people can increase work efficiency and time-management.


The expected result is to assist the physical and mental healthy person to attain self-health management. In the other hand, people can prevent physical status from changing to sub-health or disease status.


Methdology

This research uses international 10-20 system for electrode placement to measure EEG. EEG signal is smaller than electromyography (EMG). The system will remove eye movement, eye blink, heart beat, muscle action, baseline wander and 60Hz electromagnetic interference(EMI) when analyzing EEG. Measuring electrooculography (EOG) as a reference signal and using adaptive filter to remove eye blink interference. Using Low-pass filter to remove the EMG signal.


To determine the wave of concentrating and relaxing, I acquire α、β and θ waves by analyzing EEG. Using the data which is acquired by experimenting several times to determine what wave represents concentration and relaxation. Combining the method which is mentioned above with hardware to alert user.


Designed structure is given below.

EEG measurement → wireless transmission → wireless reception → interference removal → feature extraction → EEG analysis → vibrating alert


Expected results

  • Real-time measurement of user's EEG and monitor brain concentration and degree of fatigue.

  • Control panel will vibrate to notify user when the brain is concentated or fatigued in some degree.

  • For privacy and personal preference, user can set different modes of vibration according to different brain status.

  • Store latest 10 records of average time from concentation to fatigue.

  • Store latest 10 records of average time from fatigue to concentation.

  • The hand-mounted reveiver can connect to computer or mobile device, and show the records.


Applications

Increase work efficiency

Different activities have corresponding mental status. If user concentrates on work when the brain lacks of concentration, he/she may not only hurt the brain but decreasing work efficiency. On the contrary, user can work immediately to avoid wasting time and increasing work efficiency.


Avoid exhaustion

According to EEG, this system will determine user's mental status. If user doesn’t understand his/her mental status, he/she may keep concentrating on something. On the contrary, user can rest. After using this system several times, it will compute the average time of recovering from tired to normal.
